IYT: Intentional Yarn Therapy
This new project is a work in progress.
I'm exploring something I currently call Intentional Yarn Therapy. There's something about the rhythm of knitting and crochet that creates space for whatever's on your mind. It can be as simple as "what's for lunch?" or it might be for processing a bigger life change while your hands stay busy.
It's not therapy in the formal sense, just recognizing what many of us already know: working with yarn can be quietly healing.
where it started
For most of my life, knitting and crocheting were solo endeavors. Over the past few years, I've had the joy of connecting with in-person groups and an online community, where sharing techniques, inspiration, and genuine care has deepened both my bond with yarn and each other.
One of the most profound lessons has emerged not from the technical aspects of knitting or crochet but from how we speak about our work. So many of us preface our questions with apologies or point out the imperfections of our projects before anything else. Mistakes are part of the creative process, but dwelling on them can dim the joy of making and the courage to explore and experiment. When we share our work with confidence first, we not only uplift ourselves but also create a kinder and more empowering space for everyone.
what it is
Intentional yarn therapy is a mindful practice to support those coping with grief, trauma, and loneliness. The rhythm of making holds us while we process what we can't always put into words. Beauty and grief can exist in the same space. Both/And.
It happens in the shared moments: celebrating successes, talking honestly about mistakes, and quietly noticing progress. Those moments bring me hope for all of us, in every generation.
